Addictive ads…

My father just cannot comprehend why I watch television! Since this show I watch is shown in exactly three instalments of five minutes and one instalment of two minutes with some variations in the timing and WITH ThIrTeeN MINUTES (or more) of AD BREAK.

Watching television is a tedious business. With thousands of ads or (if we go by the more formal mode of speech) advertisements running in the course of the day, we find ourselves immersed in a sea of manufactured products in fairy tale packaging… you just can’t leave any of them on the shop shelf. With every little dose of serials, talk shows, events, sporting events, even political speeches, news bulletins and these days LIVE showings are interspersed with a host of these adds.  A person unaccustomed with T.V. viewing may wonder why do we put up with this? Because undoubtedly it is our compliance that fuels the growth of the ever growing GIANT that we know as advertisements. The answer to this is… of course we cannot leave out those ads. WE LoVe THeM!!! Dad I love the ads more than I like the serial.

They run the nation. They control the psyche of the nation. They made the girls go BaBeLicIouS and the Eatables DeLIcioS. Miranda made us understand the importance of Pagalpanti (bhi zaroori hai) and Mountain dew told us “Dar ke aage Jeet hai”. Idea’s What an Idea Sirji! ads took the nation by storm and the Polio and  AIDS awareness campaigns were more effective than all the work done in the field before them.

The last decade saw some delicious ads, all fun and immensely creative. From the erstwhile  Hari Sadu to Big Babool ad where the mother hen’s adopted son a wingless tortoise is able to fly- courtesy the bubble gum Big Babool. Be it the zoozoos, or vodaphone’s Bulldog, The “Gol ki Boli bol” Dog (Rocky - for those of you who don’t remember – ‘wo jo meri har baat maane’) or Mr Lion who dances with his dear wife in a jungle clearing or the Shriringa!!! Polar Bear – all the cutest television beasts keep us more entertained than the tear-jerking/nonsensical/ melodramatic soaps.

We celebrate by eating chocolates- Kuch Meetha ho jaye… and we eat chocolates because -- Meetha Hai Khana Aaj Pehli Tareekh Hai, Khush Hai Zamana Aaj Pehli Taarikh hai.

So here’s to ads and chocolates Martini glass njoy and keep ROFL bcoz of your(and perhaps also mine favourite advrts)!!Open-mouthed smile
