Escapists or Romantics?

Whatever we say in contradiction, we are all Romantics at heart…. Where else would we get this absurd idea that we have the great ability to move on through all the thick and thins of the terrors of life in the modern world?

Talking not of the entire world but only of… perhaps the big bags and small pockets of urban and rural India where life comes to a standstill for a moment and then the machines starts again except for the few families who are directly affected. This, until the next attack includes another mass to the list of traumatised families. Well, but life goes on for the others. There is work and pleasure to deal with. The next day starts and ends in a flurry of bosses, desks, chairs, then movies, dinners and oh! (how can I forget?) parties!

What happened to the loss and memory of the last day? Is it a part of History? It wasn’t that long… we cannot start a story with “Once upon a time…” when it was only yesterday. Still that is exactly what we are doing. Are we really that insensitive or have we become an escapist nation who run away from the unpleasant, rather than facing it?

Some allege it is the life-force of the nation(especially some parts of it)that lets the spirit take over. Or maybe we are such die-hard romantics that we believe in the core of our hearts that despite all the altercations this is actually the ideal universe (distorted slightly)… and hence everything magically cures itself and wakes up the next morning with a smiling, if not happy, face.

RIP Mehdi Hassan

“Zindagi mein to sabhi pyaar kiya karte hain..
Mar ke bhi chahoonga tujhe meri jaan main”

>>To love you as I live is taken. I’ll love you even after I’ve moved on..

RIP Mehdi Hassan : The God of Ghazal
As the world mourns over the loss of what Lata Mangeshkar called “The Voice Of GOd”..

Its hard to believe, and the same time truly inspiring to know that people like you exist in this very world, which is so full of mediocrity..
I 0nly wish I had discovered you earlier..

The more I discover them Urdu masters the more I fall in love with the language! Languages are like the best gift mankind has gifted itself !!
Shame on me for remaining so aloof for so long, from this spring of eternal joy ! :((

Every thing that happens in life makes us richer in experience! Lets equally value the bad ones for they teach us!

So every heartbreak, heartache and heartshake is important! Value what has passed and prepare for the future :)

“Ranjish hi sahee.. Dil hi dukhane ke liye aajaa..”

@Ayer: Hey, dime a donde vas, y si sabes tu destino..

Quique!! You’ve proved beyond doubt that Music and poetry is truly beyond the various barriers of language and culture.
The drum beat.. like heartbeats, touches the heart with such power that its impossible to ‘escape’ the magic, its beyond restraint to reign in the great gallops that the heart-horse makes !! Couple this with the heavenly voice of Enrique the Iglesias! No wonder Enrique is the ‘hero’ of tens of millions of people around the world!

@Finale Roland Garros

As I watched the King of Clay play, my heart in the breeze did sway, and the best of all Nadal won! Hurray! A thing of beauty, Nadal’s art, is a joy forever.. as I watched this final I was reminded of Nadal’s first French Open win against Federer!! The signature winning moment celebrations is so contagious!! I love it!!! :D :D :D

FA’s M.A Rant !

+Ai miss 0ur talks mi gurlies :((
I miss the liberty of speaking mi heart out to yu ppl without ever having to think how crazy yu gurls may think I am!
So here I put mi stream of consciousness across to yu !
*Wish we were sitting on our favourite Pond side bench right now.. :(

Hai dil ko teri aarzoo.. Par main tujhe na paa sakoon..

I dedicate the above line to M.A (JNU)

Kayi khwaab the tujhko lekar sajaye.. M.A.. M.A.. M.A.. M.A..
I cry for you!

But kisi ne kaha hai k:

“Apney khwaab ko chase karo. Kab tak? Jab tak usey paa na lo. Agar chhod diya to wo khwaab nahi kuj aur hai..”

Now it’s a real test for me: Do I really crave for it so bad? Do I really want it so miserably so extremely, so truly as to call it a “khwaab”?
0nly time will tell.. if it stands the test of time.. then its more real than anything else. Then it indeed is a khwaab which, I believe, will be realized no matter what! For Allah is there to see that we get what we truly desire for and deserve. What we have to do is make ourselves deserving enough..

Follow the heart.. the rest of the world will follow!

And I know mi M.A is there in mi Corazon right now.. even mi brain is ‘touched’ .! :P

But I’d rather not have something I don’t deserve. O Allah! make me deserving enough for only then will my interior infrastructure be at peace!

*Ppl who know me, know that I l0ve to have a clever way with words. One of the reas0ns why I l0ve Literature!! :-* :D *

Whatever ! I l0ve what I d0! Take me as I am 0r leave it .. and regret :))

Book Review for June

As I sit to write this, a horrific realization dawns on me: I haven’t read a book in the past 3months!!!!!! Am I even alive? O God. And I hate myself for this. X(

I wonder what went wrong in the last month.. what took my attention to levels so extreme that I forgot to read a book, a thing of such great magnanimity?
Ahem.

*The fear of losing a dear friend -cum-mentor can be really disturbing*

What do I do now?

Not having read a book and actually having no book in the ‘reserved category’, I am totally clueless .. but I need to write.. if only to divert my attention and create a tiny bit of positivity to pacify mi Corazon..

So, here goes..

Reviewing another form of socio cultural representative art..

A song called ‘Saali’ by Pakistani singer Shehzad Roy.
Initially conceived and recorded in 1995, ‘Saali’ is one of those boisterous, fun and energy-mix kind of a song which will make you get up and dance!

Aunties don’t dance, but the tabla in the background adds to the bass and thumps & pumps the blood and directly affects at the cardio-vascular veins.. so much so that even aunties are like “let’s get up and dance”. Lol :P

The eponymous title refers to the colloquial term for a girl, and has nothing to do, whatsoever, with the slang or the source of the slang :P

It’s a light take on the same old topic of wooing a girl, a saali.

“Hope springs eternal  in human hearts”

The song conforms to the statement like no other :P

“Saali tu maani nahi.. Kabhi to manegi” .. Maybe you don’t understand now, but someday you will..
Saali pehchaani nahi, kabhi to janeygi..  You don’t realize now, but someday you will..

See, what I mean by quoting the above "hope" line?

The song is sung in a very simple, non pretentious voice. Roy’s deep-seated, strong (kind of throaty) voice with a naturally great throw and simple modulation (1:09 and last line) adds that pinch of salt which defines all great songs that stand the test of time. J

Kudos to Roy for that J

Besides all the technicalities, the song is like Roy’s equivalent of Kike’s “Hero”. As much as the song is his claim to fame, the song defines him as much as he defines the song J Now that’s kind 0f sweet ! Innit?

With his path-breaking “Saali”, R0y has given words and sound to the emotions of millions of saali-l0ving brats !

Any0ne with  a “Saala” equivalent for the song ? Hehe.. :D :D

Ciao.

Really, haan ;)

At a time when Kashmir is becoming increasingly withdrawn from and averse to the rest of the country, I think building on its social inclusion can be a step forward towards a new and better relationship. What is needed is only to ‘look’ towards Kashmir! I mean I am sure that when we think about Kashmiri boys, we don’t think about the bad guys. Instead, the image of a tall, fairly fair and handsome, soft spoken and extremely well mannered guy who can, mind you, actually take your breath away, instantly flashes in our mind. A room full of Kashmiri boys is, what we girls call it, Paradise on Earth!
Every Kashmiri guy that I’ve met is about as close to being the perfect ‘Man’ a girl wants, as it gets. Why then, is our entertainment industry not employing them when otherwise Bollywood jumps at any such opportunity? Kashmiri ‘tehzeeb’ is another socio-cultural reality. The rich folk tradition of Kashmir is all too familiar to us after “Bhumbhro O Bhumbhro”. Why not have more of it? The Dal Lake is about as famous as the Taj Mahal. Why not promote an eco-friendly development of more Tourist attractions? The Kashmiri people need to be aware of their socio cultural reality and the rest of us need to make sure that the perceived image of Kashmiris, is a positive one. Let us send our message, loud and clear and help lead each other towards a better future. :)

We'll SUrViVe :)

When everything y0u thought was yours is gone, when the thing you lost is the thing you tried to hold on.. when the very reason you build you life around is proved to be a mere illusion.. When everything seems to go wrong.. When trust is broken down.. when the inner peace is taken by st0rm.. Its then you realize that everything in this world is calculated in terms of the give and take equation and where more often than not, you always have to keep on giving.

0ne should realize that “Sorry” and “Repentance” are n0 magic words and become meaningless when overused. !

But with this also comes a positive realization. No one in the world gives a one cent shit about whatever the hell may happen to you. You may as well go to hell as far as they are concerned.
Its better to buckle up and tie things down and be the best you can and give two hoots about this mean world. So that NOBODY dares to mess around with y0u. Each woman (screw the convention) for herself !

The so0ner we learn this, the better.
Have a happy life mi friends. ! J

Au Revoir  !

 AM0R:

It’s the noun/verb/adjective (and all and none of these at the conscious level of reality!! :P ) that has h0unded all us literature students for almost 3years nw!! Since it’s the most-0ft discussed and most widely used subject in every form of cultural expression : Music, Movies etc etc.. I think its time we discuss what actually it’s all about! That’ll help us in our understanding  and interpretation of literature.! So please use your Grey Cells, ppl, its begging for s0me action !!
*References from across the literary universe is welcome!
Please try give some insight into Freud-ian & Lawrence-ian (@meg) kind of L0ve.. b’coz its totally beyond me. ~X(
There’s a very well known Sms on the topic which reads :
“Its when you really truly absolutely like a person and you d0nt kn0w why.. that’s what we call Love”
How true is that people? I think in every literary depiction this is somewhat true.. take for example, Tridib in Amitav Ghosh’s ‘Shadow Lines’, he falls in love with May Price, without any rhyme or reason. 0r may be there were reasons, if we dig 0ut Freud and his ‘literally’ psycho theory.
Sindhi falls in love with most eccentric of womankind there is, and then refuses to accept that he does and complicates the situations.
God! The deeper I think the madder ill Bec0me .. I guess.!
As I think and think and think.. I c0me to a conclusion that in literature, l0ve is, more often than not, about 0neself rather than the significant 0ther.. its about what kind of a mental disposition you have.. thus, the soldier-boy in ‘The Fox’ is concerned about “his worth” all the time, which he calculates in terms of how he will ‘get’ the girl. Miriam in Sons and Lovers is totally suffering from a very low self esteem and fear of abandonment coupled with a belief that ‘she is not meant for day to day happy life but for higher things, like Tragedy’.. thanks to which she ensures that tragedy does befall her and even when it doesn’t, she carves out her own tragedy for herself.! Fcukin m0r0n Lawrence !:P And with all these already there, she has set her eyes on Paul .. “who is incapable of anything, but friendship” because “that’s a flaw in my makeup” as he is suffering from m0ther-fixati0n!! God!!!! Anything else left out by yu Mr. Lawrence ?

Awright let me site some ‘sane’ and ‘normal’ examples. Rukmani in Nectar and Rukmini in Collector’s Wife are better balanced when it comes to Love. They are both very clear about their respective ideas of how they define love. And both of them end up comparatively happier than their slightly-psycho counterparts. :P
D in French Lover is another ‘character’ who is absolutely clueless about what  she wants- and ends up ‘giving’ when she ought not to and refusing to ‘’give” when she might as well have. Do wrong decisions really teach her nothing?  Guess not.. and what is it that she wants in life? The novel ends with the picture of a lonely D standing in a well-furnished but ‘empty’ room and her life devoid of any hope for future or anyone to share it with, considering that her ‘French lover’ has now left  her and her mother is dead. Perhaps it was the impressions of a ’family’ (her parents’) life as unsuccessful and suppressing for the female rooted in her mind that prevent her from entering into/ living in, any normal relationship. The only person that she recalls as she stands alone in her room is her mother, with whom she probably feels at peace with, with whose failed relationship with her husband she identifies.
Many a times, across various literary representations, characters often fall in love with people in whom they find a reflection of what they think they are lacking in themselves. Like Laila, the rich, upper class girl with golden locks falls in love with a cigarette-smoking Roadside Romeo called Amir ( in “A Thousand Splendid Suns”)

Now coming to the real life.. Hmmm.. Its intensely personal, and like we all know, differs from one person to another. So any attempt to describe it universally would be futile. !
I leave the task to more mature and able gurls.. Go Qd!! Go Meg !! :D

Psychoanalysis

Very recently I came across an article debating the relevance of application of psychoanalytic theory on literary characters. The author argued that such a practice is redundant since these are, as their name suggests, merely literary characters. They are not flesh and bones human beings who have an intellect, and capacity for human emotions. They have not actually experienced any of the incidents mentioned in the story they appear in. And even though they are great models to practice on for those who are new to psychoanalysis, for understanding texts it is entirely avoidable. In other words literary characters are figments of imagination who simply do not have any psycho-emotive intellect to analyse in the first place.
This set me thinking. How productive is application of theories to literary characters? Are these characters and their reactions even applicable to the real world? Well as convincing as the author’s arguments were I take a different view.
Of course we understand that the characters described are not real. But does that mean they are not grounded in reality? What writers write have a strong affinity to mirror the events they have experienced (both primary and secondary experience). What we see, hear or read about inspires us to imagine and that in 99% of the cases is true.  If texts reflect social experience then the characters in them embody the human experience in that society. Here the fact  Thus Psychoanalysis of literary texts does nothing more than expose the psycho-emotional experience of the general human race and explores the number of reactions possible.
Psychoanalysis of literary characters, therefore, only help us analyse the various avenues of human mind and therefore it is an extremely important branch of literary, social and humanistic studies.

Under lov'es lamp

Hmmm, it's been after a long time that i ve opend our blog......bt anyway, nw tht i m back u people wil get to read somethng interesting, as can be undrstood frm the title of my post........Under Love's Lamp.......

It so hapnd that 4 college goers who love to go to the college even whn it is over were sitting uselessly and waiting endlessly....on a bench under a "no-fan" zone( u knw hw our colg wants us to burn our calories and stay slim and fit....height of lying)......now u may wonder wht made us wait there in a sultry afternoon?? Reason- we waited to get a little certificate for the seminar tht took place around eight months ago and it dint take tht long to prepare for the seminar compared to the time consumed in collecting the certificate frm the department!! ( Height of wht u call foolishness). We finally recvd it aftr ringing tht "Chinese Gong"!

As we sat and chatted, the topic of chat somehow deviated from Samsung galaxy Y (which Maggie HAD BOUGHT)...to  a guy who, according to one of our frnds , has supposedly  (out of the world ) hands meaning super handsome hands.....and finally to the juicy topic of love and crushes......oohhhhoooo......

NOW it was Fizzy who bombarded the question as to what exactly is LOVE? And the irony of the situation is I'm goin to answer this question who has never been in love, whose crushes do not last for more than 2 days( recent crush got over in Jan 2012).....in short an "illiterate" in the subject of love......( i wud rather solve few maths sums, seriously)

Anyway, nw tht i ve taken the responsibility to answer ths question,  i wil try my level best to provide a substantial answer.

See, love is somethng subjective, the definition of love varies from person to person. But one thing is whnever anyone is in love tht is the best feeling u can ever experience.......the entire world seems beautiful whn someone is thr to love u......

Merely having a boyfrnd or goin on a date and candle lit dinner are not the only trademarks or ingridients of being in love.....this is a modern conception whch i disapprove. Love can not be measured by the the nmbr of dates or gifts.....

As per my point of view, at tymes it happens tht u dnt even realise tht u r in love ......and we tend to label it wth names as crushes, addiction and etc.....(rembr, how Bella fall in love wth a vampire wch both of thm realised quite late......)

So what i m trying to say is thr is no tym, no place to fall in love .......Thr is a common conception tht goes is "love at frst sight"......again, i dnt thnk it is possible bt fr many it does happen.....

Most important factor concerning love is LOOKS......this is a point wch needs a long discussion bt i dnt thnk it is just the luks......othr thngs matter as well.....had this been the case average lukin girls wud hv been deprived of being loved...........

SO...I conclude tht love is somethng wch is beyond a precise definition, it is jst a delightful feeling wth little variations ...........

Hopefully....i ve passed the test.
                                                                                                                   Q.A.
